Woah, today I was da old guy! Whatch out young Grousers out there. Shit happens quicker than you think... But after all, it was an excellent workout. It's just not the same if you are riding by yourself. It so much easier to push your limits and ride in that zone.

It was a very wet ride home, I had to pack my camera away, no more bike pictures.

I made it home by 1 Pm. ate lunch, now it's time to cowboy up!

Colorado Grousers' Day started with some amazing clouds up north . . .shamrocks?. . . a good sign for the rest of the day!

Our ride to work--- a day of looking at the 2012 line up of Harleys.

Not impressive like those in Germany, Jens, but it is the first to appear in our neighborhood.

Sooo many to love. Kurt has been without a motorcycle for one year and it is not normal. He has not been without motorized rubber this long, ever, in the 38 years of being with him.

This could be dangerous. Absolutely the most comfortable.

Home, then a tea/ coffe break before the grocery store.

Wow, 60F. A bit breezy but what a fabulous day. Hopefully, tomorrow will be the same for a bike ride.

Replacing the stabilizer bar on the helicopter is very exacting work and it requires careful preparation A must have is a bright headlamp and magnifying glasses. A Grouser hat keeps the few hairs on top from being ripped out by the roots but the duct tape, although necessary for securing hands free lighting, is hard on old skin.

Some may say it was an uneventful day, but for two old farts, it was just fine. Mother Nature turned up the sunset for the end of our 2012 Colorado Grousers' Day. We are reminded by all of the Global Grousers' posts, that yes, Life is GOOD!!

I get to fly on this highway called the "Outer Ring Road" daily.

Jens, my ambulance-driving friend calls it the "Outerbahn" after your "Autobahn".

The difference: Drivers on the Autobahn actually know how to drive, unlike these guys.

Gotta copy an exam for Monday, after reviewing it with a coworker.

I pull one out of the pile every now and then to ensure that the machine is behaving.

This machine recognizes me and hates my guts.

86 exam papers to mark from earlier in the week.

Basically, Whit Shit will turn mild. How mild?

They're really not sure at this time of the yea, but this time they're confident it'll be damn mild.

But, I don't trust this bunch of underpaid, underappreciated civil servants, so ah just went out and shoveled the Whit Shit (about 3cm of it) off of our beloved rink. Rain on the rink is ok... even at 15mm it settles in to the established ice and freezes nicely. But 15mm of rain on top of 3cm of Whit Shit is a recipe for long-term ice rink disaster in ma opinion. What can happen is a 3cm / 1 inch layer of weak ice floating atop the (several inches deep) established ice. When the impulse (Impulse = Force / Area) of a skate blade goes over this kind of "Weak ice atop established ice" situation, the weak ice shatters and, #1 you go nowhere on your skates, #2 you've got a mess on your ice sheet, and #3 you're frustrated as hell.

So: This year, ma "Day in a Grouser's Life" starts with me about to hit the hay, checking the forecast, and realizing, for the sake of 15 minutes in the beautiful evening air, I gotta go shovel off the damn rink... otherwise roll the dice and hope the ice sheet survives the sketchy forecast.

The evening was beautiful.

Super stormy Day II

I bet I could have set a personal speed record on my bicycle today. It is blowing pretty heavy here on the Oregon Coast. Several roads are closed and some of our trees snapped. The rear fence needed some 2x4's for support to keep it from blowing to heaven. The blueberry net is of course down and one of the neighbors tree got uprooted. So once this storm quits I have to start up the the chain saws and cut firewood again.

Notice ma ice ain't melting... not the stuff in the glass nor the stuff on the 24' x 34' sheet.

Awesome night to get some 'wrinkles' in the sheet evened out.

I go out with the sprinkler, and in these conditions it's like doing a powder coat spray paint job.

You can actually watch the water from the sprinkler almost automatically freeze as it hits the ice.

The trick is to get a small pool going, then move on to the neighbouring section.

This gives a clean glaze, with no water beads.

(Yes, I take great pride in my ice.)

In case the focus was not so great on the last one... 18.6C inside...

Did sprints today and was watching the black clouds closely. After #9 I saw some white shit flying from heaven. Hell is warm so it must have been heaven, righty? Kay then, that was enough for me right there and then. I looped to HWY 101 and back home. More and more was coming down, Hell help!

Made it home just in time! Wish that Grouser from Hawaii would be here to get a sniff of that white shit from heaven.

Hail call it we here, Hagel for Sepp and Jens. It's worse then snow because it is not tickling your face when it hits you. I am switching to plan B now, going the Canadian way ey. Will let nature build a rink in the street - its hockey time!

Garmin vs. Cateye

So here's my Garmin Edge 500 vs. my Cateye Micro Wireless.

Does that difference in size make that much of a difference?

Almost double for the Garmin... but it's only roughly 30g in the difference.

Consider: The density of pure water is 1g/mL.

A tablespoon of water is 15mL.

So, if you take two less tablespoons of water in your water bottle,

you've made up for the difference in mass already.

Furthermore, energy drinks with salt and sugar added would be much denser,

so if you're taking energy drinks on your ride,

taking not even 2 tbsp less of Gatorade makes up for the Garmin!

...or...

You could just wear your Grouser wings and be

WEIGHTLESS!

This is my day off, I mean day off riding since everyday is my day off. I will do less Km's this year but more quality riding. Trying to stay on a trainings schedule now and today it said DAY OFF.

Riding to the post office doesn't count for miles nor for training and since it was a perfect day for not riding I used my mail bike to get wet. Makes sense ey...

The ride was a failure, I have to admit it because I was looking for a follow-up to Randy's post. You know da whale kine of picture we have here in town but it seems like the heavy rain flushed them all out to sea. Good bye BIG-Bonnie, BIG-Mary and BIGLarry!

Hey Men,

Here's a screen shot from my Garmin Edge 500 initial upload.

I didn't have the HRM set up for this initial ride... so the gadget has even more potential than this.

If I had, the pull down menus on the graph section could include an overlay for HR.

There are other data options as well; I bought the Garmin with the cadence sensor as well, so that will be nice for this roadie.

As I'm living in snow-slush season here now, I can't sacrifice the integrity of the bike frame / components in the salt / sand mix on the roads to test the gadget further.

Bottom Line: My initial impression is that the Garmin is fantastic!

Realize: I live out on the edge of Canada, where the low population would not inspire Garmin to provide detailed maps... its such a small customer base. Yet, the satellites do all the work. The map of my route provided by the Garmin is accurate, yet it does not perfectly match the mapped roadway in yellow. My every turn and every distance is correct, yet Route 20 (in yellow) and the essentially vertical dotted section of my route should line up (i.e. I was riding on Route 20 during that vertical section). This isn't a problem to me, as the roadways do not even need to be shown; I just need my actual numbers only. Maps would not be able to account for new roads, anyway... The section that runs northwest to link back up to the start of my route is a completely new road that was only opened in December, and would not be expected to be on any map.

I plan on running both my Cateye and my Garmin early in the season, just to see how the two match up.

When your a chunky cyclist like me, a few more grams is no big deal!

Not a bad day for January 3rd. We had a max of 58F. / 15 C.
Much nicer to ride when it is a lillibit warmer. Went north on my first ride then headed back home for an apple plus some water. Checked the answering machine and found a message from Chris the racer. He was ready for a ride so on I went for ride number two. Crossed the bridge and picked-up Dan.
Chris has a Garmin and sent me a link to his data that he uploaded, picture is attached. How does yours look Murray? After light wheels and Ti bike, pedals upgrade and a new jersey (at least one...) isn't this something for Randy Wayne?

I'm happy to report that my first Ti flight was a pleasure. These new Time Titanium ICLICK Carbon TITAN Pedals weigh only 182 grams for the pair and with 3 contact points transfer the power extremely well. They have 5 degrees of free float and are easy to click into like a ski boot, toe in first then heel down, a loud click lets you know your in tight. The bike fit is excellent, the frame feels adequately stiff yet still comfortable on the rough roads. At 25% lighter weight and with the easy rolling new wheels acceleration is super quick. I am now way, way faster on the hills. I beat my fastest time to the Kokee bridge, a 3 mile long hill by 1.25 minutes and still carried on a conversation with the triathlete I was riding with the whole way up. Was it worth the big buck$? hell yes, you betcha, yep, yes sir, you get what you pay for!

Where's the red, red , red? I kept it simple, just a little red and black here and there.

16.1 Lbs. / 7.30 Kilograms

Weight includes pedals, bottle cages and computer, I can sure feel the weight difference on the road, it can fly like a bird.

The hubs roll forever, but sing a little when freewheeling on the stand, on the road you can hardly hear them at all. The wheels came in a little under the claimed weight and run true as can be. The Conti 4000S tires are a comfortable riding tire.
